AT tuneup day 2

After a great breakfast at Harbor House B&B we were taken a mile away to the trail head. The trail started off thru meadows but we were soon back in the forest. The trail was mostly rocky and steep as we made our way to the highest point in Massachusetts, Mt. Greylock. There were some wet areas in which the trail fairies had improved.

As we walked thru the forest with lush undergrowth the theme music from “The Last of the Mohicans” came to mind. What or who was watching us as we walked? I was motivated by imagining our arrival at Bascom lodge where Madeline Stowe would great me with a martini and Becky would give Nana hugs to Daniel Day Lewis.

Near the end we came across a scene right out of Walden Pond.

With one mile to go we were ready to pick up the pace and end the hike for the day. Unfortunately the trail became steeper and more rocky, slowing our pace to less than one mile per hour. Finally we emerged from the forest to see the memorial that marks the summit of Mt. Greylock.

Only 100 yards away was historic Bascom Lodge and our accommodations for the night.
