Before I start the story of the day I wanted to share a photo of the entry into Castrojeriz. The spirits of the fortress above dating back the 11th century still stand guard over the much more modern 17th century cathedral below.

After an early dinner and good nights rest we were on our way by 8:00. Everything was lining up to be a great day. First there were flowers at our feet and clam shells in the sky.

Then best of all, Becky initiated our morning affirmation that we still love each other. I quickly chimed in and looked at my watch. We had crushed our previous record of 8:33, and like two well honed athletes had set a new standard of 8:18. With daylight beginning one minute later each day, it will be hard to top this in the future. After 43 years of marriage, or maybe because of 43 years of marriage, it is still nice to have this affirming moment each day.

So now with a GREAT start to the day we faced our first obstacle; a 1000 foot climb ahead

At the halfway point the view down the hill were spectacular, not so much looking at the rest of the climb ahead.

As we neared the top we started to feel a sense of accomplishment

Once at the top it was time to celebrate.

So now we would have a flat walk for the rest of the day, or so we thought. In about a quarter mile that law of physics about what goes up must come down reared its ugly head.

As we started down the steep grade we noticed a lady walking side to side like a drunken sailor. “More steps but less strain on the knees” so with that several of us followed her lead. If you had of thrown a sheet over us it would have looked like a Chinese dragon. Soon we were at the bottom taking in the endless views.

Another mile or so and it was time to take a break and slice up the apple we had bought the day before.

After a total of six miles we approached a town where we could eat lunch. But first we had to cross a one lane bridge that led us into a new province

It was great to receive such a warm welcome

After lunch it was back to the beauty of the vast open spaces.

Our resting spot for the night came into sight too soon, as it took another hour to reach.

Our hotel is across the street from the church so after taking a few photos we went in and lite a candle for one of our camino friends who is dealing with some issues back home.

The balance of the day was spent visiting and having dinner with existing and new camino friends. So after dinner we retired at the late hour of 8:00 giving me time to blog about the special day. I have no idea what tomorrow will bring, but I can’t wait to find out.
I am loving reading about your adventures and seeing your beautiful pictures!

Sounds like a wonderful day. Congratulations on breaking your love record. Very inspiring. That 18% grade is steep. Odd that they built the path almost straight down instead of incorporating switchbacks, which really do what the woman improvised.

The meseta is no walk in the park, and yet you make it appear almost so. Amazing! Press on, dear friends, you’re almost halfway!
