Semana Santa in full swing

The preparation for Semana Santa continued with decorations and staging of chairs.

Balconies decorated all along the various parade routes
A before and after of the street entrance to our apartment.

We attended several Pasos at this location and a few across town, and by far the best were the ones we observed from the balcony. It was from this vantage point that the full magnitude and scope of the event could be fully experienced.

Getting ready
Women wearing the traditional Mantilla
The day of parades begins with this procession

Then the banner for each Hermanidad is presented followed by hundreds of Nazarenos wearing the Capirotes

Each carries a candle and at resting points children will collect and ball up the dripping wax
If you look closely you will see the wax ball. We saw them as large as a softball

Each Hermanidad will have two Pasos: Paso del Palio (Mary) and Paso del Cristo (Christ or a scene with Christ). Each is carried by 30+ Costaleros under the Paso. The Paso is followed by a band whose music intensifies the experience. Last but not least are the Penetentes who carry wooden crosses. Below are some pictures and videos that don’t fully capture the beauty of the event.

Since the Pasos of Mary are covered, our balcony vantage point did not allow us to see her fully
A little bit better picture

By far, the most moving image was that of Christ being lowered from the cross.

After almost five hours on the balcony it was time to leave and after mass on Sunday our Semana Santa will be complete

Even with all the official activities, we have still been able to carve out time for what has become our favorite activity; a three to four mile walk exploring the city.

Taking in some new sights or seeing others from a different perspective:

Triana bridge from below
Skate park up close
Cruise ship made it up the river
Los Remedios neighborhood with the entry arch we will pass through when we experience Féria in two weeks.

Our walk today took us through Parque de Los Principes.

And we found our way back to our favorite restaurant in Triana

Crispy ravioli with blood sausage

With postre of course

And the day would not be complete without finding a street entertainer or two

With Semana Santa winding down we will have a quiet week ahead. But we have learned, it will be nothing short of an adventure.

  1. Hello Adventurers extraordinaire, I went on a Chicago River Architectural cruise and learned that Chicago has a strong connection with Seville architecture. There is a beautiful building by a Seville architect modeled after a famous cathedral in Seville. If you ever come back this way the cruise is a must. Hope you enjoy the rest of your residence in Seville! Richie
